What I learned from my first Blab

What I learned from my first time blabbing

I Blabbed.

But before I tell you about it, I want to tell you about a time that I reallllly messed up.

I mean… looking back, I’m like… ugh. Kick. Self. In. Pants.

I had the perfect opportunity to set myself up for success, and I blew it. The thing is though… I didn’t even have a clue.

It was January 2013 and I was starting a new semester as a college instructor – teaching public speaking.

I’d been teaching since 2008, and there were some questions that I knew I’d have to answer a bazillion times. No matter how I explained it.

Now, at this same time, I was also just starting to learn about the world of online business, and I was getting ready to launch my ecommerce business. Learning about online marketing opened up my eyes to a whole ton of opportunities,

I was learning what helped people want more. So, I wanted to try it out in my classroom. I started by creating a video that answered one of their top questions. And I posted it on YouTube and linked it up for them on our course page.

I was curious to see if this video would bring in traffic – and I wanted to see if I could do more with video in an actual business.

About a month after I posted it, there were barely any views.

Now, granted, it was a pretty crap-tastic video. I don’t know what I was expecting. But, I left it up because it did still help my students.

But otherwise? I gave up. I didn’t post another video on my channel for a long time. It just didn’t seem worth it.

Fast forward to today… that video brought in over 16K in views in the last 28 days alone.

(And let me just say again… CRAP-TASTIC. Seriously. Couldn’t have been worse).

Not only do I get the views, but I get comments almost weekly and sometimes even personal emails thanking me for creating it.

Now – the video gets that response for a few reasons, and I’ll get into that in another post, but the point is… imagine if, instead of giving up after just a month of virtually no views, I had actually created a video each week, or even each month! How many opportunities would I have had to bring in new leads and reach new people each month?

Back to Blab.

Blab is a new platform. Traffic is still relatively light, but the concept is solid. Here’s what I like about it:

  1. It’s a live streaming platform that allows multiple hosts, guests, or audience members to jump on camera and join the conversation. It’s basically like having a virtual talk show in front of a live studio audience.
  2. Chat is live. Even if people don’t want to jump in, they can chat right along next to you. Ask questions. Make comments. They’re part of the experience.
  3. The audience gives props. Just like a live studio audience can applaud when they like something, so can viewers of a Blab. Instant feedback.
  4. It’s easy to repurpose. You can easily record and save the Blab so you can repurpose it on your blog, YouTube, or iTunes.
  5. It’s easy to connect with others. Not only can you invite your audience on with you, but you can also head on over to other shows and easily join the conversation, without having to book it in advance.

Basically, it’s an easier way to communicate, network and interact with your audience. That’s a win in my book.

I went on Blab the first time last week. I was on a weekly show, Be Bonita. We talked about getting on video, live stream, and feeling your best while doing it.

We didn’t have a ton of viewers.

But I’m not going to let that stop me. (I don’t want to repeat a 2013 YouTube incident).

Check out one of my first Blabs and let me know what you think.

If you’re in a position right now where you want to reach an audience, but you don’t quite know how, I encourage you to try out Blab.

It’s easy to set up an account, and allow notifications on your desktop. If you see a Blab that interests you, or that you think you can add to, head on in. Jump in a live call, and go for it.

It’s a great place to get visible!
