When you think about sharing your message with the world, what comes to mind?
Last week, I took a break from consuming any media. I avoided the computer, the internet, social media, podcasts, TV, you name it… I wanted to focus on me and my message, without the distraction of the outside world.
Sometimes, our purpose and our message can feel so cloudy. And I realllly needed the time to reflect and think… what is it that I’m sharing? What is it that I’m really trying to say? At the core of it? What’s my purpose?
The purpose. It’s a big deal.
Without a purpose, communication is just noise. It’s meaningless. Finding the purpose is always the first thing I do with clients. Because if we don’t have that… if it isn’t clear, the keynote will never have the impact we intend. No matter how great the speaker.
But it’s scary how easily that purpose gets lost.

It gets lost when we scroll through Facebook and see our peers and competitors posting their wins. It’s easy to think, “why aren’t I doing that??”
It gets lost when we sit down to write a newsletter and our mind is juggling the 10 new ideas we have this week alone and we can’t quite tie them all together.
It gets lost when other people pull at our time and we feel so guilty saying no… or we don’t even want to say no! But we know it doesn’t really align with the message we want to share… the purpose that we’re trying to accomplish.
And it gets lost when we’re crafting our talk and we want to just teach and share and show everyone the amazing things we’ve discovered.
That purpose… it’s elusive sometimes. It’s always there. We just can’t always pin it down. OR articulate it.
But it’s soooooo helpful to define your purpose. To have it and share it. To articulate it in a way that is clear and powerful.
So let’s articulate it. What’s the purpose of your communication this week?
Maybe you’re getting ready to launch a new book, or course. Or maybe you’re purpose is to transform the life of another person.
Whatever it is that you’re focused on, let’s get it out there.
Here’s how I like to write my purpose. I write this big and bold on top of all of my documents before I start typing. Whether I’m scripting something, or just writing a blog post.
I write…
Purpose: To [teach / convince / entertain / inspire] [my audience (be descriptive)] to/that [the point / topic].
For example…
Purpose: To inspire a top-notch group of info-preneurs to be intentional with their message by creating a clearly defined purpose.
Having this purpose really helps me outline the rest of my communication. And I bet it’ll help you to.
Here’s my challenge to you.
Create your purpose.
Follow the format above and post it below. I love seeing what everyone is up to, and I can’t wait to hear from you!
