7 Signs It’s Time To Start Freelancing

By Sandy

You know you’ve been thinking about it…

Rushing from home to daycare, daycare to work, work to daycare, back to home, for a few hours of rushed “family time,” before it’s sleep and repeat.

That’s how it was for me.

And honestly? I know I’m not the only one.

Or… maybe you’re home full time now and itching to do something challenging while bringing in some extra income… but don’t want to add the stress of working outside the home and losing control of your schedule (and your life).

Dropping my son off at day camp a few weeks ago, a woman in a grey minivan was loudly screaming at her child… “Get out of the car! I’m going to be late for work!”… as she practically drove away before the kid could even climb through the sliding side door.

I had to laugh.

Not because it was particularly funny, but because we’ve all been there.

Maybe I’m weaker than everyone else, but I just couldn’t take it.

As a single mom, the only person financially responsible for our family, I was beyond stressed. I felt like I was drowning trying to manage it all.

My breaking point came when I was working 3 jobs… none of which paid particularly well (despite my education level and working at what most people would consider a “good” job).

I realized that if I was going to work this hard, I wanted it to be at building my own source of income… not dependant upon anyone else.

And especially one in which I could set my own hours and create my own destiny.

That was really it… creating my own destiny.

Is it a tall order? Yeah, maybe. But it’s doable.

What about you? Is it time to create your destiny? Design your life to be lived the way you’ve always dreamed?

Maybe it’s time to stop waiting for “one-day” to be different and start doing it… right this second.

Here are 7 signs that it’s time for you to get serious and start that side-hustle.

        1. Your commute is killing you. If you’re in the car for just a half hour each day, that’s 5 hours a week. Two hours a day? That’s more than a full workday each week… sitting in traffic, stressing your mind and sitting for way too long. Not to mention, it’s just no fun.
        2. Your growth is limited at your current job. The truth is, if you’re working for someone else, your trajectory is always limited. You’ll never be able to fully control your ascent or when it will stop. Even if you fully expect to climb high on that ladder, there will always be someone else to answer to and a cap on your salary. This was a deal breaker for me. I like the excitement of unlimited possibility and fast growth.
        3. You’re a problem solver. Things will likely go wrong when at some point once you begin to work for yourself. If you can solve problems, you’ll handle anything that comes your way!
        4. You’re ready to shine. Maybe there’s a special talent that you’ve always had, but you’re just not utilizing it right now. When you’re your own boss, you can focus on highlighting your strengths and finding clients who value that.
        5. You want a new career (without years of schooling). I hear from people all the time who want to do something, but don’t want to spend years and loads of money to get a new degree. The truth is, most of the time, the degree isn’t necessary. It’ll make changing careers easier if you’re in corporate… but it won’t matter if you’re running the show.
        6. You miss important moments. An early soccer game, a volunteer spot in the classroom, a field trip… sometimes it’s nice to be able to go to those things without having to ask your boss for permission. It’s nice to say to yourself… hey, this is important to me. So. I’m going.
        7. You want to build something meaningful. If you’re passionate about helping a group of people or changing an industry, freelancing can be your entry point. For example… Passionate about healthy eating? Work with nutritionists, meal planning services, or health bloggers. Whatever change you want to make in the world, now is your time to “be” it.

And perhaps less profound…

If you’re ready to add to your income, freelancing is your answer.

There is virtually no startup cost (as long as you have internet and a computer), it doesn’t take a large time commitment to start getting work, and it’s accessible to just about anyone… and it’s real… no clicking on coupons for $5 a week.

We’re talking legit income.
